PRE-PREP DEPARTMENT (KEY STAGE 1)There is tremendous progress made by a child between the ages of five
and seven. National curriculum levels 1-2 are covered and very small classes mean a great deal of individual attention for your child. The emphasis is on an investigative approach and children have many
opportunities to experiment and discover. We
have modern computer equipment and children rapidly become confident on the
computer. Traditional methods combined with progressive teaching are used. There
is an emphasis on reading fluency, the method used being particularly
successful, and children are taught cursive (joined) writing as soon as is
possible, though this depends on the individual. Maths work involves challenges,
investigations and problem solving. Science lessons are of a very practical
nature, ‘hands on’ experiences. The curriculum also includes Art/Design,
Drama, Music, P.E., Dance, Music and movement, History, French, Geography, I.T,
R.E. Children follow a road safety course. The Key Stage One class is taught at the Upper School. Children are encouraged to enter Speech and Drama Competitions and in recent years have won cups, trophies and medals for poetry, reading and drama at the Worthing Festival & the Brighton Speech and Drama Festival.
