Nick Searcy

Nick Searcy played the role of Deputy Ben Healy in American Gothic. As assistant to Sheriff Lucas Buck, Ben seem to be put upon, with no power or will to stand up for himself. This is not entirely true, as a few of the episodes illustrate. A very fair-minded character, Ben always puts the welfare of others first, usually at the expense of his own happiness. Ben seems to be fighting constantly with his own conscience, against Lucas' wishes.

Born in Cullowhee, North Carolina, Nick Searcy attended the North Carolina School of Arts, then went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has appeared in several off-Broadway plays, and at regional theatres in productions including "Guys and Dolls", "Cabaret" and "Jesus Christ Superstar".

Nick has appeared in a wide variety of film and TV roles, including "Days of Thunder", "Fried Green Tomatoes", "When Love Kills" (with Gary Cole), "The Fugitive", "The War" (with Lucas Black), and "Nell". In 1997 he produced, directed and acted in his first independent feature - "Paradise Falls". Nick has recently appeared in the large budget HBO TV series "From the Earth to the Moon".

Nick is married to actress Leslie Riley and they have a daughter, Chloe.

American Gothic (TV series - 1995)

In the role of Deputy Ben Healy, Nick Searcy appears in all but 5 of this 22 episode series.

Although he seemed to be a supporting character to the leads in most of the episodes, Ben really epitomised the feeling of the show. In a couple of episodes, he took over the reins. In Echo of Your Last Goodbye, especially, Ben became the focus of all the action, when the ghost of Merlyn appeared to him and appealed to his better nature to stop ignoring the events in Trinity, and try to do something about them.

Although Ben has a few problems in his private life, in essence he is a good man and is constantly fighting with his conscience. Her ideas don't go exactly to plan, however, when she meets a truck driver who isn't as caring and gentle as he seems. Things take an even more sinister turn when he kidnaps her and keeps her prisoner while he demands a ransom from her father.

A major role for Nick, and based on a true story, the movie is dedicated to the real John Sapp, who sadly died before filming could begin.

Nell (1994)

This movie, set in Graham County, North Carolina, is about a feral girl found living alone in a shack in the woods.

Nick Searcy plays Frank Bennett, a thug who beats his wife, and subsequently disappears - an event which alters the lives of everyone involved, including the arrest for murder of Frank's wife's best friend. Without the character of Frank Bennett, there would be no movie.

In a departure from his good-guy roles, Nick plays this violent wife-beater with conviction. The look on his face as he kicks his wife down the stairs from behind, is pure hatred.

Victim of Beauty (1991)
