HIGHLAND DREAMS

Wouldn't you just love to move to Scotland?

6th May 1999 was a momentous date for Scotland. On that day, the Scottish people elected the first parliament to sit in Scotland since 1707.
The Scottish Parliament promises new opportunities for those who make their homes and their living in Scotland.

As modern life becomes increasingly stressful and urban areas more crowded and polluted, many people are looking for a place where they can escape to a calmer, cleaner way of life. Scotland, with an area of over 30,000 square miles and only five million people, has around one-tenth of the population of England living in three-fifths of the area. Photo of view from Diabaig

The feeling of having room to breathe is tangible, especially to those from the overcrowded south-east of England. In the Scottish central belt, where around 90 per cent of the population live, the towns and cities have not developed the urban sprawl which bedevils many industrial nations, and the countryside is still close by even if you live in the centre of Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Scotland is a beautiful country - stunning scenery, magnificent wildlife, the tranquillity of the open spaces. And opportunities!

Opportunities for your children to enjoy a safe upbringing and excellent education; opportunities for you to make a living in ways you may never have thought of; opportunities to live the lifestyle you've always wanted to.

Scotland has so much to offer, whether you choose the Highlands and islands or other rural areas, or whether you are attracted to the cities of the central belt.

Rural Scotland

Wine Bars? Who Needs Them?
If you've got initiative, a love of things out of the ordinary, respect for your neighbours' culture, a tolerance of a slower pace of life, yet an entrepreneurial spirit, then you could make it in the unspoiled rural parts of Scotland.

Urban Scotland
If you long for the adrenaline of big business deals, wine bars, discos, night clubs and the fast life generally, then Edinburgh, Glasgow or the other cities of Scotland could be for you.

How Have Others Done It?
The majority of people who visit Scotland come on holiday. And when they're here they dream of living here permanently - a cottage by the lochside, seals bobbing about in the water, a pair of eagles soaring overhead. Or they hanker after a stylish old town house in Edinburgh or Glasgow, in the cultural heart of the country but still only a step away from beautiful unspoiled countryside. The best of both worlds!

Sooner or later during their holiday, they ask the incomers already living here: 'How did you do it? How could you leave family, friends or the security of a career?

Many people ask us the same questions. And we say: 'We just got on with it and did it because we really wanted to, and life's too short to hang around doing things we don't like just because doing other things seem difficult.'

It's Not Easy!
But, of course, it's not easy, and having done it ourselves, we understand the difficulties in managing the logistics of a move at the same time as coping with the emotional difficulties of leaving friends, family and familiarity behind.

If this is what you feel, you need a guide to help you along the way, a guide that explains in detail the minutiae of daily life in Scotland, that directs you to sources of information and official bodies to help ease your way, and that examines case studies of people who have already made the move.

My book, Live & Work in Scotland contains all this and more.
