Annabel - by Elon Whittaker
|
She's not a girl to be trifled with!
Annabel Turner had never been good-looking. Her father, when talking about her in the early days, acknowledged the fact of the matter while seeking to protect his wife's feelings by his use of extravagant language: "She has," he said, "a singularly unprepossessing visage but she is very bright." Her mother, more accustomed to calling a spade exactly what it is, said she had a face like a robber's dog. Both parents were disappointed that their genes would be projected into the future inside such an unattractive package. Each secretly blamed the other for the packaging.
Poor Annabel, a misfit with a talent for invoking death and injury as she grows up in the north west of England in the 1960s and 70s. People gossip - you know how they are! Annabel's a witch. Isn't she?
