NORTON    0    1     HEMINGBROUGH

A Richie Collins goal three minutes before the break was he highlight in an otherwise dull and often boring encounter. The win moves Hemingbrough into second place in the League table with a game in hand on the current leaders Sheriff Hutton though, with the season approaching The halfway point there are still five clubs in realistic contention for the league title

An away trip to Norton in the middle of December is never an exciting prospect and so it proved to be, the combination of a bitterly cold day and the notoriously poor facilities at Norton did nothing to encourage good football. A couple of half chances to both sides were the only notable events in the first period other than, what proved to be the all-important goal. Harry. Jackson cleverly lobbed the ball over the home defence into the path of Richie Collins whose deft body movement bamboozled the home keeper as if he was a Paul Daniels magician and left Collins with the simplistic task of putting the ball into an unguarded goal.

The second halt sew Hemingbrough merely going through the motions and it was left to some excellent defending from the Grown Inn Man of the Match Matty Zacharenko and Dave Young who stemmed the tide of Norton attacks so much so that keeper Brown had only one shot to save In the final minutes both Jackson and Wood were denied goals by two good saves by the Norton keeper.

HEMINGBROUGH RES   2     7    POPPLETON RES

The visit of second placed Popppleton was always going to be another tough fixture for a Hemingbrough side desperately in need of a confidence-boosting win. Their record of been top goal scorers in the league was impressive, and in the final quarter of an hour they showed wtiy they have accumulated so many goals as they converted half chances and punished slack defensive covering to score five goals in this final period and take the game way from Hemingbrough.

After a relatively even first halt, the sides were separated only by a piece of cool finishing From “Sid” Siddique who, on 32 mins, latched onto a through ball from Daryl Tate before placing the ball wide of tine visiting keeper to give Hemingbrough a 1-0 lead.

‘Pop’ were level within two minutes of the re-start and from a free kick lust outside the box they took the lead. The Brough were still in the game at this stage and grabbed a deserved equaliser on 70 mins when a Kyle free kick found Leigh Young who scored with pure panache. At this point Hemingbrough believed that they could get something from this game but whether it was just presumptuous or a case of to many Christmas parties Hemingbrough abated without trace and conceded the sack full of goals which did not reflect the true difference between the two team.
