Funiculì Funiculà.

This is a famous song written by Italian journalist Peppino Turco and set to music by Italian composer Luigi Denza in 1880. It was composed to commemorate the opening of the first funicular on Mount Vesuvius. It was sung for the first time in the Quisisana Hotel in Castellammare di Stabia and met with huge success. It was presented by Turco and Denza at the Piedigrotta festival during the same year. Edward Oxenford, an English songwriter and translator of libretti, published a version which became somewhat traditional in English-speaking countries. Although the song was a popular hit performed by Mario Lanza in the 1950's, it is nowadays more associated with the late great Luciano Pavarotti.

Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind. (Repton)

Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, 1st Baronet (1848 – 1918) was an English composer probably best known for the choral song "Jerusalem", the coronation anthem "I was glad" and the hymn tune "Repton" which sets the words of "Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind". Born in Bournemouth Hampshire and brought up at Highnam Court Gloucestershire, he was the son of artist and collector Thomas Gambier Parry. He was educated at Eton and Exeter College Oxford. Although a prolific general composer, it is a little sad that he is only really remembered for his sacred music. I thought it might be appropriate to include this hymn here, bearing in mind the location.

Walking To Missouri.

This is a popular song written by Bob Merrill (1921 - 1998) an American songwriter, theatrical composer, lyricist and screenwriter in 1952. The best known versions of the song were recorded by Guy Mitchell and Sammy Kaye. He is probably best remembered for his songs "Mambo Italiano" and "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window", as well as many others.
I am indebted to Monte Chaney for finally providing me with the elusive title of this piece. Monte, a theatre organ fan - coincidentally from Springfield Missouri - sent me a most interesting e-mail recently, telling me about his Wurlitzer Style "E" Opus 778 in the Delmar Garden Theater! Thanks again Monte.

How Great Thou Art.

Lyricist Carl Boberg (1859 – 1940) was a Swedish poet, writer and legislator best known for writing the original Swedish lyrics of the hymn known universally in English as "How Great Thou Art": the music being an old Swedish folk tune. It is "How Great Thou Art", one of the most recorded hymns ever, which has preserved Carl Boberg’s name in history. It was ranked second (after "Amazing Grace") on a list of the favorite hymns of all time in a survey by "Christianity Today" in 2001. I thought it might be appropriate to include this hymn here, bearing in mind the location. Those who listen very carefully will hear cries of "More", from an appreciative visiting seagull at the end of this piece!

March of the Cobblers.

I have been unable to find much information about this piece of music, although research tells me it was written by R Barrett, and arranged for brass band by E Seibert. If anyone know more about its origins, please do let me know. The music is probably best known after being featured in the 1996 film "Brassed Off", a bittersweet comedy about music and the right to work. A Yorkshire colliery is faced with closure and so is the town's brass band. The film paints a vivid picture of working-class communities under threat.

South Rampart Street Parade.

This was written in the 1930's by Ray Bauduc and Bob Haggart who were two of the last survivors of Bob Crosby's Bobcats. Ray Bauduc was a trend setter in traditional jazz circles. His precise, disciplined, yet fiery patterns and syncopated fills helped many New Orleans drummers. Bob Haggart was a top bassist for 60 years. Originally a guitarist, Haggart taught himself bass while in high school. He gained fame when he joined Bob Crosby in 1935, Rampart Street is a historic avenue located in New Orleans, Louisiana. The upper (up river) end of the street is in the New Orleans Central Business District. After crossing Canal Street, it forms the inland or northern border of the French Quarter (Vieux Carre).

You Are My Sunshine.

This sees me reverting to my "roots" and doing what I first did in the musical world even before I left school: playing piano in a band. These clips show me helping out Geoff, a life-long musical friend/rival, when he was stuck for a keyboard player to play for a "gig" at an "old folks" home on the outskirts of Taunton (Somerset) UK. I apologise for the slightly "out-of-sync" audio on some of the tracks, and also for my apparent heavy-handiness on the keyboard. I do actually have a very light touch but, unfortunately the keyboard was sitting on a makeshift stand on a lightly-sprung timber floor. At times, the keyboard managed to bounce off the stand and onto my knees! After some persuasion I eventually agreed to join the band, which is now called "Swingtime". Anybody wanting to book us within UK just needs to contact Geoff on 01823 412999.
