Shaolin
Temple
History
Shaolin Kung Fu is said to have originated when a Buddhist Monk
named Da Mo (known as Bodhidharma in the west or Daruma in Japan)
arrived from India to preach Buddhism in China. It is said that
during his many years at the Shaolin Temple the he noticed the monks
were weak, many would doze off while listening to sermons. Realising
that the monks needed to be fit and much healthier he developed
and taught the '18 Lohan Patterns'. These sets became the foundation
for many of the Kung Fu forms and fighting sets still used today.
Following these traditions, good Kung Fu requires the student to
develop their body, mind and spirit in balance by following the
teachings of their Master (Sifu) with sincerity and dedication.
