| Playin' in the Rain
This "sceptered isle" of our's isn't exactly renowned for its good weather! In fact, ask any tourist what brings them across the waters and you can be sure it won't be the guarentee of sunshine! But each and every year, as summer (apparently) approaches, the City of Birmingham Brass Band, like hundreds of other bands up and down the land, provide hours of musical entertainment to one and all in parks and parades, fetes and festivals - all at the mercy of British weather. Come rain or shine - the show must go on!
As Musical Director, I have endeavoured to shower you with music to suit all tastes. I challenge you not to recognise at least one of the tunes in the Gilbert and Sullivan medley, or instantly know the signature tune of the March King himself. Enjoy the glitz of Hollywood in an unmistakable Irving Berlin number and the humour of Alan Fernie's cheeky version of a Beatles' classic. Hear the band turn into frenzied savages (as conductor, I've grown accustomed to it in weekly rehearsals!) in de Falla's devilish rampage, and enjoy the familiar strains of one of the most popular of all brass band's repertoire in Katies Moss's "Floral Dance" - Girl Power and Flower Power all rolled into one!
Our final offering, "Singing in the Rain", is dedicated firstly to those who brave the storms to listen to the band, determined to enjoy the music whatever the weather, and secondly to those who provide that music, brollies at the ready! So here's your chance to sit back, put up your feet and enjoy a concert in the comfort of your own home by the City of Birmingham Brass Band who, for once, aren't Playin' in the Rain.
Warren Belshaw. (Musical Director, 1997-2002)
