For the early Churchills see here: The Early Churchills George Spencer 1738/9-1817 4th Duke of Marlborough married Lady Caroline Russell, daughter of the John 4th duke of Bedford and Gertrude daughter of John Leveson-Gower Earl Gower, heir of the Yorkshire Gower family. They were parents of the fifth Duke. George Spencer-Churchill 1766-1841 5th Duke of Marlborough, married Susan Stewart, daughter of John Stewart 7th Earl of Galloway and Ann daughter of Sir James Dashwood. This Scottish lady was the mother of the next Duke. George Spencer-Churchill 1793-1857 6th Duke of Marlborough, married firstly his cousin Lady Jane Stewart daughter of George Stewart the 8th Earl of Galloway and Jane Paget daughter of the first Earl of Uxbridge, who was the mother of the 7th Duke. He married secondly Lady Charlotte Flower. John Winston Spencer-Churchill 1822-1883 7th Duke of Marlborough, married Lady Frances Anne Emily Vane daughter of Charles 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. They were the parents of the 8th Duke. From 1876-1880 the Duke was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The third son was Lord Randolph Spencer Churchill 1849-1895, a major Victorian Tory Politician. He married the American heiress Jennie Jerome and had an eldest son Winston, known to history as Sir Winston Churchill 1874-1965, probably the most famous British Statesmen in history and leader of the government during the Second World War. Descendants of his have also gone into politics. Clementine Ogilvy Hozier Spencer-Churchill 1885-1977 as widow of Sir Winston Churchill was created Baroness Spencer-Churchill (her husband refused a Peerage). She was a devoted support to him during their long married life. George Spencer-Churchill 1844-1892 8th Duke of Marlborough, married firstly Lady Albertha Hamilton daughter of James Hamilton 1st Duke of Abercorn and Lady Louisa Russell daughter of John Russell 6th Duke of Bedford. Lady Louisa was a great proginator of many aristocratic families. The Duchess Albertha divorced her husband in 1883, allowing her husband to remarry in 1888 Lillian Price, Lady Hammersley, an American. She retained her title Lady Blandford. Charles Spencer-Churchill 1871-1934, 9th Duke of Marlborough son by the first wife, made a marriage which was very popular at the time to Consuelo Vanderbilt, a wealthy American heiress. He made a second marriage to Gladys Deacon, a American from Boston. John Spencer Churchill 1897-1972, 10th Duke of Marlborough married back into the aristocracy when he married in 1920 Lady Alexandra Cadogan, daughter of Henry Viscount Chelsea by Mildred Sturt daughter of The Baron Alington. He remarried after her death in 1961 Frances Charteris, Lady Long, the Countess of Dudley. John Spencer-Churchill 1926- is the 11th Duke of Marlborough. He married firstly Susan Hornby who he divorced in 1961 to marry Athina Livanos, Mrs Aristotle Onassis. A further divorce led him to marry the Swedish aristocrat Countess Dagmar Rosita Astri Libertas Douglas, daughter of Count Carl Ludwig Douglas. The Duchess is a descendant of the Baden Royal house, and sister to Elizabeth the wife of Max Duke in Bavaria, an heir to the Stuart Royal line, and thus aunt of Princess Sophie (bn 1967), wife of Prince Aloys of Liechtenstein (bn 1968) Heir to the principality. |
