CONSTABLE OF SKIRPENBECK

AND MARKET WEIGHTON,

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE

Oswald Constable, Blacksmith of Skirpenbeck in the East Riding of Yorkshire, was buried on the 3rd April 1700. He married Ann who survived him, dying in March 1717/18 and was buried on the 16 March. He left a Will.

I have not found as of yet his parents names, but I have a theory that his grandfather could have been Leonard Constable of Beverley, Gentleman, who was buried at St Mary's, Beverley, 22 September 1631. In his Will Leonard Constable mentions his son Benjamin and this name was used frequently in the male line descendants of Oswald Constable. There was a Constable family at Flambrough, and the Church is called St Oswald. Leonard claimed descent from the Flambrough branch of the family. More research will be done on this family in time.

I also need to know the maiden name of his widow Ann.

I have two descents from Oswald Constable, through his daughter Rachel Mosey.

Recently I found the Administration of John Constable of Gate Helmsley, near York dated 1672 (Osbaldwick Wills at York). One person who is found as working on the Inventory was Oswald Constable. Gate Helmsley is not far from Skirpenbeck. He left young children, only the daughter Jane survived and she married when she was in her very late thirties to a George Bradley of Youlthorpe. I think that John Constable was the same age as Oswald as they were fathering children at the same time.
