SIR MARMADUKE CONSTABLE MP, Known as the Little. Born in 1443 was in France under King Edward IV and at the taking of Berwick of which he was made captain. He shared with his four sons in the glory of Flodden, 1513, being then 71 years of age, his nephew Marmaduke Constable of Cliffe was possibly also there. His distinguished services were acknowledged in an autograph letter to him from King Henry VIII. He died in 1518, 10 Henry VIII, MI Flamborough.

He married:

1. Joyce Stafford, daughter of Sir Humphrey Stafford, and had issue.

2. Margery Fitzhugh, daughter of William Lord Fitzhugh and widow of John Melton of Swine, living 1511, s.p.

6. Ellinor Constable, married, 1st John Ingleby of Ripley, 2nd after 28 August 1502, probably 1504-5  Thomas Berkeley, Baron Berkeley abt 1472-22 Jan 1532/3.  She died 1525. By her second husband she was ancestor of the Berkeleys, Barons Berkeley, Descendants include also many other famous people of the 20th Century, including the Duchess of Alba and the actress Audrey Hepburn.

 

SIR ROBERT CONSTABLE OF FLAMBOROUGH, knighted 17 June 1497 at the battle of Blackheath, for his signal services against the Cornish Rebels. He was also at Flodden. In the 28 Henry VII he took part in the Lincolnshire commotion excited by Lord Hussey, was attainted (and executed at Hull being hanged in chains over Beverley gate at Hull) and thereby forfeited Flamborough and 35 other manors in Lincolnshire.

He married:

Jane, daughter of Sir William Ingleby, of Ripley, and sister of John Ingleby of Ripley who married Ellinor above.

4. Margaret Constable, married, 1st John St Quintin of Harpham, and had issue, married 2nd Sir Edward Gower, Knt. and had issue. Her descendants are well represented in the peerage from the second marriage. The heir of Sir John St Quintin and Margaret is Sir Charles Legard of Scampston Hall, Bart.

SIR MARMADUKE CONSTABLE OF NUNEATON, co WARWICK, high sheriff of Yorkshire 1 and 24 Henry VIII, and served the king in his wars, was with him at the siege of Teroven, and the battle which followed when he received the honor of knighthood, conferred upon him at Lisle. On 29 May, 38 Henry VIII, he had a grant by letters patent under the designation of "Sir Marmaduke Constable, of London, Knt., son of Sir Robert Constable, of Flamborough, in York," of the monastery and belonging. In the 1 Edward VI, he was made a knight-banneret, in the camp of Roquesborough, by the Earl of Surrey, general of the army. He died at Nuneaton, 20 April, 2 Elizabeth, 1560, MI.

1st. Elizabeth only daughter of Thomas, 1st Lord Darcy, of Aston, by his 2nd wife Edith sister of William, 1st Lord Sandys. She bore 8 children.

2nd Margaret daughter of William Booth, or Boteler, gent.,, no known issue

SIR ROBERT CONSTABLE OF FLAMBOROUGH, which estate was restored to him 5 Q. Elizabeth I, 30 years of age at his father's death in 1560, knighted by the Earl of Sussex in 1570, being with that general, in the expedition that year into Scotland, to aid King James VI, against the Hamilton Faction. Sir Robert sold the monastery and manor of Nuneaton in 6 Elizabeth to Sir Ambrose Cave. He committed bigamy having married again during his 1st wife's lifetime, Heraldic Visitation 1564. Ob. circa 35 Elizabeth.(1593-4)

SIR ROBERT CONSTABLE OF FLAMBOROUGH, Knt, 1570.and died 43 Elizabeth I, 1600/1.

Married:

Anne daughter of daughter and heiress of John Hussey, of Duffield.

SIR WILLIAM CONSTABLE OF FLAMBOROUGH AND HOLME, co.. York; the latter he sold in 1633, and the former to Sir Henry Griffith in 1636. For his service under the Earl of Essex (A.D. 1599), In Ireland he received the honor of knighthood; and being involved in the subsequent proceedings of that nobleman, he was arraigned for high treason, but remanded without trial, on a special letter from the Queen, that he and others were unwarily drawn in. On the 20 march following, he had her Majesty's warrant, to Sir John Popham, Knt, Lord Chief Justice, to be admitted to bail. Sir William was created a baronet by King James I, 29 June, 1611, served in parliament, first for the borough of Knaresborough, and afterwards for the county of York, from 25 James I to the time of his decease. He became a great advocate for the liberty of the subject, and being imprisoned on account of ship money, adopted a decided part against the king. He was a colonel in the Parliament army, and his name appears in the warrant for the execution of King Charles. He died during the usurpation, 15 June 1655, and thus escaped personally the resentment of the restored monarch, but his lands, &., were especially excepted in the general pardon, granted by Charles II, as likewise, all pains, penalties, and forfeitures, as though the Act of Grace had never passed. He died without surviving issue, and was buried in Westminster Abbey, in Henry VIII's chapel, 21 June.

Dorothy, dau of Sir Thos, 1st Lord Fairfax, born at Denton, 13 July 1590, mar., at Newton Kyme, 15 Feb, 1608, died 9 March, bd at Bishophill Elder, York, 11 Mar., 1655/6.
