GRUFFYDD AP GWENWYNWYN AND
AGNES WENTWORTH, WIFE OF SIR ROBERT CONSTABLE MP.

GRUFFYDD AP GWENWYNWYN, A son of Gwenwynwyn Prince of Southern Powys, invested with the lordships of Arwystli, Cyfeiliog, Mawddwy, Caereinion, Y Tair Swydd and Upper Mochnant by King Henry III in 1241, transferred his allegiance to Prince Llywelyn in 1263, married before 1241, Hawise ( who died 1310), daughter of John III Baron Lestrange of Knockin, Shropshire and his wife Lucia Tregoz, and died between 21 February 1286 and the end of 1287, having had issue, with five sons,
1. Margaret Verch Griffith ap Gwenywnwyn.
MARGARET VERCH GRIFFITH AP GWENWYNWYN, married Fulk Fitzwarin V 1251-1315, the First Baron Fitzwarin, a Welsh Marsher lord, son of Fulk Fitzwarin IV (died 1264) and his wife Constance de Tosny, daughter of Ralph de Tosny and Pernal de Lacy, and a descendant of King Henry I of England, and had issue, with others:
HAWISE FITZWARIN. She married firstly Ralph de Goushall, son of Piers de Goushall and Ela Camoys. He was born about 1274, and died 1294. . She married secondly, Robert de Hoo. By her first husband she had a daughter,1. Hawise Fitzwarin
MARGARET DE GOUSHALL was born May 12, 1294, and died July 29, 1349. She married firstly Philip le Despencer, son1. Margaret de Goushall, b. May 12, 1294; d. July 29, 1349.
of Hugh Despencer the elder, Earl of Winchester (See coat of Arms on right) and Lady Isabel de Beauchamp. He was the brother of Hugh Despencer the younger, Earl of Gloucester and not his son as the dates do not fit. He died September 6, 1313. She married as her second husband John De Ros, created a Baron, but an enemy of her first husband's family. He was the son of William Baron de Ros the second baron and his wife Maud de Vaux. John de Ros died in 1339. Margaret de Goushall had issue by Philip le Despencer,

Philip le Despencer, Knight.PHILIP LE DESPENCER, KNIGHT, OF CAMOYS MANOR, was born April 6, 1313, and died about April 23, 1349 possibly of the Black Death as that was the year of a particularly vehiment attack. He married, it seems, Joan Cobham about 1339, daughter of John Baron Cobham and his wife Joan Beauchamp. She took a vow of chastity and died January 20, 1349/50. She had issue:1. Philip le Despencer, Baron Despencer,PHILIP LE DESPENCER, Baron Despencer, was born October 18, 1342 in Gedney, and died August 4, 1401 in Goxhill. He married Elizabeth, who parentage is unknown, and might have been obscure. He was created Baron Despencer, but none of his successors used the title. They had issue,1. Philip le Despencer, Knight.PHILIP DESPENSER, KNIGHT, of Camoys Manor and Nettlestead, Co Suffolk, was born about 1365, and died June 20, 1424. He married Elizabeth de Tibetot about 1385, daughter and co-heiress of Robert 3rd Baron de Tibetot and his wife Margaret Deincourt, daughter of William Baron Deincourt, born in 1371 and heiress of Nettlestead. They had issue,MARGERY DESPENSER, born about 1400, and died April 20, 1478. She married firstly John de Ros, Baron, Lord Ros of Hamlake, son of William de Ros and Margaret Fitzalan. He died 1421 at the Seige of Beauge. She married secondly Roger Wentworth, Knight of North Elmsall in Yorkshire, younger son of John Wentworth of North Elmsall, June 25, 1423, He died October 24, 1452. She was buried at St Margaret and St Bernard at Queens College, Cambridge. They had issue (not sure of order),1. Margery Despencer, bborn about 1400; d. April 20, 1478.

1. Philip Wentworth, Knight, executed May 18, 1464; m. Mary Clifford.2. Agnes Wentworth, who married Robert Constable, Knight,.MP; b. 1423; d. May 3, 1488.of Flamborough, MP
3. Henry Wentworth, Knight of Codham Hall who died March 22, 1481/82; He married firstly Elizabeth Howard of the Ducal family, called of Wiggenhall and secondly, Joan Fizsimon.
4. Thomas Wentworth, a Priest, who died September 21, 1489.
5. Elizabeth Wentworth who married John Calthorpe of Norfolk
6. Margaret Wentworth who married William Hopton of Swillington
AGNES WENTWORTH, of Nettlestead in Suffolk, married Sir Robert Constable of Flamborough in East Yorkshire, MP, he lived from about 1423-1488, and she died in 1496. This information is confirmed by information from Heraldic Visitations. They had issue.
