APPENDIX 5 - SEAMER OWSTON BRANCH AND JEFFERSON'S OF YORK

1. WILLIAM OWSTON OF KIRBY MISPERTON AND SEAMER

A son of Thomas Owston and his wife Elizabeth of Thorpe Bassett.  He was baptised in 1668/9 at Thorpe Bassett and was buried in 1730/1 at Seamer in North Yorkshire.  He was very young when his father died and this might account for the reason why three of the younger members of the family have traceable connections with Kirby Misperton about 1700.

He married twice. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Moon in 1698 at Kirby Misperton and his second wife, Elizabeth Glaves  in 1711 at Seamer.  He was a farmer and owned land at Thorpe Bassett which remained in his family for several generations. 

He had issue:

1. Hannah OWSTON, Born Kirby Misperton in 1697

2. Thomas OWSTON OF SEAMER (1699-1744)

3. Elizabeth OWSTON, Born in 1702 at Kirby Misperton, married to Edward Hudson and lived at Seamer, they had issue.

4. Jane OWSTON, Born in 1705 at Kirby Misperton, and died in 1732 subsequent to childbirth at Thorpe Bassett.  She married John OWSTON of Thorpe Bassett, her cousin and had issue.  Her grandson Thomas OWSTON was to marry Elizabeth Jefferson, the grandaughter of her brother Thomas OWSTON.

5. MARY OWSTON, born at Kirby Misperton in 1708.

 

2. THOMAS OWSTON OF SEAMER (1699-1744)

A farmer at Seamer and landowner at Thorpe Bassett.   He was born in 1699 at Kirby Misperton and died in 1744 at Seamer.

He married Elliner (1701-1780) who survived him and died at Seamer.

He had issue:

1. William OWSTON (1726-1727)

2. Francis OWSTON (1729-1803)

3. William OWSTON (1731-1796) of Scarborough, a brewer.

m.Ann COOK  (1732-1811)

Issue:

3.1 Ann Frances OWSTON  (1773-1809)

m. Thomas JEFFERSON, of York, builder and shipowner. Her cousin.

Issue:

3.11 Elizabeth JEFFERSON

4. Thomas OWSTON (1734-1754)

5. Elizabeth OWSTON (1737-1800)

Married  Robert JEFFERSON (1720-1801), builder and shipowner of Bishophill, York, in 1768 at St Mary's Church Scarborough.  Elizabeth and Robert were buried in the Church Yard of St Mary Bishophill, Senior and their monumental inscriptions can still be seen in the Church Yard, even though the Church has been demolished.

They had issue:

4.1 Robert Jefferson, Merchant of York.  Born 1777 and died in 1824 in York.

  He married Elizabeth Fettes (1787-1835).

4.11 Ann Jefferson, born about 1810 and alive 1841.  

She married William LABRAN (1810-1841) of Bishopthorpe, York, and had issue:

4.111 Ann Elizabeth LABRAN (alive 1881)

She married firstly in 1855 George Pearson and secondly Henry Atley, Gentleman of the Mount and Scalby in 1868.  By George Pearson she had issue:

4.1111 Georgina Pearson (born about 1858)

4.1112 John Pearson (Born about 1861)

4.2 Thomas Jefferson, builder and shipowner of York and Scarborough.  He married his cousin Ann Frances OWSTON, see above.

4.3 Elizabeth Jefferson (1770-1854) of York, married to Thomas OWSTON, merchant of York, of the Thorpe Bassett branch of the family, her second cousin, and third cousin, and had issue.

6. Sarah OWSTON, born at Seamer in 1740 and buried there in 1816.

7. John OWSTON, (1744-1816) of Cayton, see below.

3. FRANCIS OWSTON, of Seamer and Thorpe Basset   (1729-1803)

He was born at Seamer in 1729 and was buried there in 1803.  He was a farmer of Seamer and Thorpe Basset.

He married Ann MUSHAM (1735-1781) in 1759 at Seamer.

They had issue:

1. Thomas OWSTON  (1760-1814), who was born and died at Seamer.  He did not marry, but he may have had issue outside marriage.  His uncle John OWSTON of Cayton inherited his land it seems.

4. JOHN OWSTON, of Cayton and Seamer (1744-1817)

He was born in Seamer in 1744 and died in Cayton in 1817, farmer and landowner of Cayton, Seamer and Thorpe Bassett. 

He married at Filey in 1783 Ann Lowther, born in 1759 and died in 1814. 

They had issue:

1. William OWSTON (1784-1828), Gentleman of Cayton, Seamer and Thorpe Bassett.

 

5.  WILLIAM OWSTON (1784-1828), OF CAYTON, GENTLEMAN.

Landowner and Gentleman Farmer of Thorpe Bassett and Cayton in North Yorkshire.  He was born in 1784 and died in 1828 at Cayton. 

He married Ann Nessfield at Folkton in 1807.  She was born in 1784 and died in 1859 in York.

They had issue:

1. Ann OWSTON, born in 1811

    Married to Matthew Clark of Carnaby. They had issue:

1.1 Francis Clark of Carnaby, born about 1849 in Carnaby.

1.2 Ellen Clark.

2. Jane OWSTON, born in 1813, and died at York in 1890.

Married as his second wife, John Holtby, Solicitor of York.  They had issue:

2.1 John Holtby, died young in 1858 at York.

2.2 Eliza Holtby, married to Daniel Howard Walters in 1878 at St Olives Church, York, (right) and  had issue:

2.21 John Howard Walters, Solicitor.

2.22 Maud Mary Walters.

2.3 Ann Holtby.

2.4 Jane Ellen Holtby, born in 1850 and died in 1853 at York.

3. Eleanor OWSTON, born in 1815.

4. William OWSTON, born in 1818 and died in 1819.

5. John OWSTON, born in 1820 and died in 1874 at Cayton.   He never married and lived at Cayton all his life.
