1 John Storkell, alias Smith of Helmsley fathered a child by Elizabeth Colley who he later married at Helmsley on the 19th May 1590 in Helmsley.  She died in 1610 and was buried 2nd February 1610/1.  He was buried at Helmsley, either on the 26th January 1615/6 or 16th May 1627.  Some have argued that illegitimacy was rare in Elizabethan times.  The possible reason that John did not marry until 1590 is that he was already married to someone else, probably the Margaret Storkell of Beadlam who died in 1588, and was buried at Helmsley on the 23 July 1588.   The issue of John Storkell and Elizabeth Colley were:

2. Nicholas Storkell, born 1586, baptised at Helmsley 6 June 1586 and died 1650 in the Helmsley area
2. Christopher Storkell, born 1590, and died in 1590, baptised Helmsley 14th July 1590 and buried 11 August l590 at Helmsley
2. Michael Storkell, born 1591 and died in 1592, baptised Helmsley 2nd December 1591 and buried 6th April 1592 at Helmsley
2. John Storkell, born 1593 and died in 1593, baptised Helmsley 18th May 1593 and buried 3rd July 1593 at Helmsley
2. John Storkell, born 1596 and baptised 20 August 1596 at Helmsley.
2. Margaret Storkell, who died in 1602, and was buried 6th August 1602 at Helmsley .

2 Nicholas Storkell , born 1586 in Helmsley and baptised on the 6th June 1586 Helmsley and died in 1650, being buried on the 9th April 1650. He lived at Pockley, near Helmsley. His god parents were Nicholas Chambers, John Lockwood and Cecily Cuthbertson.  This is probably where he received the name Nicholas.  I have assumed that he is the first Nicholas Stockill and so he might be.  His first wife is Mary Cliff who he married on the 27th May 1606 at Helmsley. It was stated that he was from Beadlam, and she probably died by 1611. In 1611 at Helmsley he married Alice Pybush who must have died by 30th December 1617.  He married thirdly, 30th December 1617 at Wheldrake near York, Margaret Stockton, who died in 1636, and was buried at Helmsley 27th March 1636.  Nicholas may have been in Civil Court at some time.
He had issue:
3 John Storkell, born in 1615, and baptised 24 February 1615/6 Helmsley, a Yeoman, of Pockley, and died in Pockley in 1670. He was buried 17 March 1670/1 at Helmsley.  He mentions Margaret Richardson and Nicholas Storkell in his Will as sister and brother.

3 Nicholas Storkell, born in 1618, and baptised January 31, 1618/19 Helmsley, see below.
3 Margaret Storkell, born in 1628, and baptised Jan 8, 1628/9 Helmsley, married 9th September 1652, Helmsley, William Richardson.
3 William Storkell, born in 1632, and baptised July 30, 1632 Helmsley, and died in 1635, and was buried 18 Jul 1635 at Helmsley.

3. Nicholas Storkell of Pockley, near Helmsley was baptised on the 31 January 1618/9 at Helmsley. He married probably firstly a first wife who I cannot identify who died by 1659.  He married probably secondly, Ann Read at Helmsley in 6 December 1659 and died in 1684 at Pockley, and was buried at Helmsley on the 15 Mar 1684 /5 .  She died in 1684, being buried on the 23rd March 1684/5.  His administration was proved at York on the 31st March 1685.  Ann Read was baptised in Helmsley 19 November 1637.  She was the daughter of John Read of Pockley who died in 1672 at Pockley and his wife Margaret who died in 1680 at Pockley (may be born a Warriner).  Her sister Martha Read married in Helmsley 13th November 1666 William Warriner.  Their daughter Ann Warriner 1677-1757 married Henry Read, her cousin.  Ann Read Stockill is mentioned in the Wills of both of her parents.  Nicholas Storkell or Stockill was the only Stockill in Pockley who paid the Hearth Tax in 1673

By an unknown wife he had issue:
4. John Stockill, born 1648, baptised 14th May 1648 at Helmsley.
4. Elizabeth Stockill, born 1649, baptised 16th February 1649/50 at Helmsley.   She married 11 February 1672/3 Helmsley Henry Read of Helmsley, the brother of Nicholas Stockill's second wife.  He died in 1674 at Pockley, and was buried 13th September 1674.  He fathered a postumous son, Henry Read who was born in Pockley in 1674 and baptised in Helmsley 8th November 1674.  Henry died at Pockley in 1721 and was buried at Helmsley 25th August 1721.  He married Ann Warriner and see below.

By Ann Read he had issue:
4. Nicholas Stockill born 1663 died 1747 in Pockley, Baptised June 14, 1663 Helmsley Burial February 23, 1746/47 Helmsley.
4. Jane Storkell, born in 1666, and baptised 1 April 1666 Helmsley, died 1667 and buried 17 December 1667.
4. John Storkell, born in 1668 and baptised October 10, 1668 Helmsley.   He may have lived at Beadlam, and was buried on the 19th September 1749 at Helmsley. He was married probably and his son Nicholas Stockell, Yeoman of Beadlam was buried in 18th March 1737/8 when he left the bulk of his goods to his father.  He left a shilling to his 'unhappy wife' Ursula.
4. Margaret Storkell, born in 1672 and baptised May 20, 1672 Helmsley. Died in 1755, buried Helmsley 11 April 1755.  She married on 20 May 1697 John Beecroft at Helmsley.  He was buried at Helmsley 12th January 1749/50 and left a Will, naming his four children, John, Thomas, William and Ann Beecroft.
4. Judith Storkell, was born in 1674 and baptised at Helmsley 31st January 1674/5.
4. Ann Storkell, born in 1677 and baptised 2 Feb 1677/8 Helmsley, she died in March 1682/3 and was buried 21 Mar 1682/3 Helmsley.

4. Nicholas Stockill born 1663 died 1747 in Pockley, baptised on the 14 June 1663 at Helmsley and buried on the 23 February 1746/47 at Helmsley. His Administration was granted on the 7th December 1747 to his son Nicholas.  He married at Gillamoor Chapel, Kirby Moorside on the 27th November, 1696 Hannah Pilmoor. She was buried on the 9th March 1751/2 at Helmsley as a widow.

5. Elizabeth Stockill born 1698 in Pockley, Helmsley, Baptised March 7, 1697/98 Helmsley Burial April 1698 Helmsley
5. Nicholas Stockill born 1699 in Pockley, Helmsley died 1783 in Pockley, Helmsley, Baptised June 16, 1699 Helmsley, buried February 13, 1783 Helmsley Husbandman and Labourer in Pockley.

5. Nicholas Stockill born 1699 in Pockley, Helmsley died 1783 in Pockley, Baptised at Helmsley on 16 June 1699 and buried at Helmsley on the 13th February 1783. He was described as an Husbandman (small farmer) and a labourer. He married firstly at Middleton nr Pickering, Jane Skelton on the 4th February 1731.  She must have died before 1744, when he married secondly, Mary Garbitt at Helmsley, 8 May 1744. She died at Pockley in 1758 and was buried at Helmsley on the 9th October 1758. Nicholas married thirdly, Mary Atkinson at Helmsley on the 28th February 1759 by License. The License was granted on the 28th February 1759 and in the surviving Bond and Allegation, Nicholas Stockill was aged 55 and Mary Atkinson 21. She survived her husband and died in 1804 at Pockley, being buried on the 28 February 1804 at Helmsley.  The use of the 'Marriage by License' is interesting in that neither came from outside the parish.  Mary Atkinson was born in Pockley and baptised at Helmsley on the 21 September 1735, the daughter of Thomas Atkinson of Pockley and his wife Mary Read, the daughter of Henry Read and his wife Ann Warriner (see above), thus a distant cousin.   There was another Mary Read around at that time, but she has been discounted as this wife.

Nicholas had issue by his first wife 1746-1755, and second wife 1760-1774.

WILLIAM STOCKILL OF HACKNESS, SILPHO AND SNAINTON LINE

9 . William Stockill, of Low Dales Hackness born August 2, 1869 in Brompton by Sawdon, died 1952 in Scalby. Baptised on the 10th October 1869 at Brompton By Sawdon, North Yorks, and buried on the 20th February 1952 at Snainton. Farm Labourer and farmer. He married Hannah Hoggart(h), born 1868, and married on the 25th November 1891 in Scarborough, Westborough Methodist Chapel. She died in 1937 in Snainton and was buried on the 1st June 1937 at Snainton. Hannah was supposed to have been partly brought up by a person called Hannah Jefferson.

In 1978 I bought a copy of her birth certificate when I was carrying out my first year of serious research. The result was that I identified her as daughter of William Hoggarth of Egton, as station porter and his wife Esther Britton of Slingsby. I was a little unhappy with this on the grounds that when I found her marriage certificate soon after, there was no father mentioned. There can be several reasons why no father was mentioned. The first is illegitimacy, the second is father's death, and the third is just choice. The first would fit in with Hannah being brought up by Miss Hannah Jefferson, and would not be the one I found a birth certificate for. William Hoggarth was still alive in 1891 at the time of the Census, but could have died before Hannah's marriage in November of that year. It would be unlikely that I would find any Wills of the family to prove a relationship. Hannah was living with John Smithson and his wife Mary at Normanby as a servant in 1881. William and Esther were still living at Tunnel Cottages, Egton, with four children. The Census enumerator had not recorded where they were born.

Hannah was at Silpho in 1891 on an adjacent farm to the one where William was working. She stated that she was born at Egton (not Grosmont as she did in 1881, or more likely John Smithson did). Egton and Grosmont are actually quite close to each other, and this is not beyond reason that the she used the same birthplace by choice. One of her sons had told me that she was born at Staithes. There is still the problem of Hannah Jefferson, but, Hannah could have lived with Hannah Jefferson during the later 1880's, or between 1871 and 1881. I have no details of this at the moment.
