Women of `unblemished character` given access to their children in the event of separation or divorce.
1857 - Matrimonial Causes Act - Divorce CourtsWomen obtained limited access to divorce, usually on a specific cause other than adultery. Rights of access to children after divorce extended. Women given rights to their property after a legal separation or a protection order given as a result of husband`s desertion.
1870 - Married Women`s Property ActAllowed women to retain £200 of their earnings. The same year the Education Act provided elementary education for girls as well as boys.
1882 - Married Women`s Property ActAllowed women to own and administer their own property.
1884 - Married Women`s Property ActWomen no longer a `chattel` but an independent and separate person.
1886 - Guardian of Infants ActWomen could be made sole guardian of children if husband died.
1894 - Local Government ActWomen eligible to vote for parochial councils.
1907 - Qualification of Women (County and Borough Councils) ActWomen allowed to become Councillors.
1918 - Representation of the People ActWomen allowed to vote if over 30 and Women allowed to become MPs.
1919 - Sex Disqualification Removal ActOpens all professions to women except the Church. Lady Astor (second women elected to Parliament) takes her seat in the House of Commons.
1923 - Women allowed to obtain divorce on grounds of adultery aloneHusband only allowed access to children if a desirable influence.
1925 - Married Women`s Property ActRequired husband and wife to be treated as separate individuals in any property transactions.
1928 - Representation of the People ActWomen over 21 given vote in parliamentary and local elections.
1937 - Divorce ActMade desertion and Insanity grounds for divorce.
