ZOUCHE FAMILY

OF LUBESTHORPE, IN LEICESTERSHIRE

1. William la Zouche, alive 5 Apr 30 Edward 1, he married and had issue:-

2. Sir Roger la Zouche, died 1303.

We do not know who was the father of this William.  Curiously the families of Zouche at Lubesthorpe and the Baronial families lives were intertwined for several generations.

2. Sir Roger la Zouche, died 1303.of Lubesthorpe, in Leicester (given by Milicent de Monealto [aka MAHAUT] wife of Eudes/Eon la Zouche of the Baronial family and sister and heiress of George de Cantilupe), married to someone unidentified at this time, and had issue:

3.1 John la Zouche

3.2 Ralph la Zouche, Outlawed 14 Mar 1326 over the death of Roger Beller.

3.3 Roger la Zouche, died 1326.

3.4 William la Zouche, Archbishop of York.  Born after 1292. Died at Cawood, the home of the Archbishops of York, 17th July 1352.  In his Will drawn up in 1349 (probably during the worst of the Black Death outbreak that was claiming so many of the Clergy) he left instructions for a Chantry to be built in his memory, but only a Chapel was endowed.  This might not be a reflection of the meanness of his executors and the Dean and Chapter of York Minster, but a reflection of the economic situation after the Black Death.  The Zouche Chapel still exists today in York Minster.

Roger Beller's death also involved Eudes/Eon La Zouche who was the son of William la Zouche the First Baron la Zouche, of the main line and born about 1297 and died in Paris aged about 28.   He was the grandson of the previously mentioned titled Milicent and Eudes.  He was pardoned for his part in the killing of Gaveston in 1313 with his father (curiously the Constables of Flamborough were also involved in this), but in 1325 was indicted with others over the death of the same Roger Beller at Brooksby in Leicester.  (Complete Peerage, Vol XII/2 p.940).  Eudes/Eon was outlawed and fled to France, where he died.

3.3 Roger la Zouche, born about 1292 and died after 1326. Knighted by Edward 111. Outlawed for murder of Roger Beller on the 14 April 1326.  He married firstly Matilda, and secondly Foelicia and had issue by both:-

Issue by Matilda:-

4.1 Juliana la Zouche, married to John St Andrews, whose family inherited one third of the Manor of Lubesthorpe.

4.2 Margaret la Zouche, married to William Bredon.

4.3 William la Zouche, alive 22 Edward III and 37 Edward III.

Issue by Foelicia:-

4.4 Johanna la Zouche, married to Marmaduke Constable of Flamborough in Yorkshire as his first wife. He was executor of the Will of William la Zouche Archbishop of York. They definately had issue as Robert Constable who died in 1441 was found to be in possession of one third of the Manor of Lubesthorpe. His son in 1470 eventually cut his connection with the Manor.

Notes:

1. J. Nichols in history of Leicester covers this family.

2. There is no definate evidence of how this family relate to the main family of Zouche in Leicestershire. It was previously thought that Archbishop William la Zouche belonged to the main family but with the recent Oxford Dictionary of National Biography claims him for the Lubbesthorpe branch.  This makes it more likely that he chose Marmaduke Constable to be his executor.

3. Robert Constable who died in 1441 was the father of Sir Robert Constable who married Agnes Wentworth of Suffolk, a descendant through her mother of the aristocratic Baronial Zouche family, indeed she descended in the pure female line back to William and Millicent la Zouche, the First Baron Zouche and sister of Eudes/Eon La Zouche (above) who lived in the first half of the Fourteenth Century.
