USA & Canada
The airline letter.
We would strongly encourage members affected by North American inclusion to write to the Airlines urging them to participate in the scheme.
If the PETS scheme is to work, it is essential to have direct routes open from US/Canada into the UK to avoid animals having to be sent to quarantine kennels under the Early Release System (normally 2-3 days to clear paperwork and associated costs.)
The airlines need to apply to DEFRA for an RMOP (Required Methods of Operations) which is the instrument allowing an Airline to carry pets into the UK under the PETS Scheme. Please write to as many airlines as you can and ask them to contact Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, PETS Scheme, 1a Page Street, London SW1P 4PQ. Tel: + 207 904 6000. Fax: + 207 904 6834.
Please
send a copy of the letter below to as many airlines as you can. We must urge
them to apply to D.E.F.R.A. - (the Department for the
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) to be licensed under the Pets Travel scheme

Dear
Re: Extension of the UK Pet Travel Scheme to incorporate the USA and Canada
On 11 December 2002 the Pet Travel Scheme was extended to include the USA and Canada. This means that dogs and cats can enter the UK without spending 6 months incarcerated in a quarantine kennel, providing they have been correctly micro chipped, vaccinated and blood tested.
To make the scheme operational and effective, airlines from the USA and Canada must be approved and licensed to carry pets into the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme. If an Airline does not have the necessary RMOP (Required Method of Operations) from D.E.F.R.A. (the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) then a correctly prepared animal which enters the UK on an unauthorized airline would be taken to a quarantine kennel on arrival under what is known as the Early Release System. This means an unnecessary stay there of 2/3 days in order to have the paperwork checked. This of course carries associated charges.

As a person whose job is taking me to the UK for a number of years
As a person returning to the UK after a number of years in the US/Canada
As a frequent traveler to the UK
it is important to me to be able to travel with the whole family, including the family pet. This has previously been denied because of the UK's outdated and archaic quarantine laws.
I would urge you to contact the Pet Travel Scheme at D.E.F.R.A.,1a page Street, London SW1P 4PQ Tel: +207 904 6000 Fax: +207 904 6834 and make a bid to be included in the scheme from outset. This would be a great service to the traveling public and no doubt an additional source of revenue for the airline.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely yours,
