Historic Designed Landscape plea

The following are extracts from a letter sent to The Historic Protection Division of English Heritage asking for the Walled Garden to be registered as an Historic Designed Landscape.

"WE justify our request by pointing out that this is a rare survival of an urban garden of the 17th Century with a high degree of evidence for its form and planting.  This is a Grade II  listed site.

"You will note from the attached documents the history of the garden and the fact that Thomas Wilbraham in the early 17th century kept precise records of all that was purchased for his house and garden. Sir Richard and Lady Baker-Wilbraham, who own these records, have kindly given us access to them and a Nantwich historian has researched them.

"This small acre of land, which has laid waste for a number of years, is all that remains of the original garden.

"Unfortunately this garden is threatened by development for housing and we are once again fighting to save it from this fate. I enclose a copy of our Restoration Plan for the garden and an archaeological investigation, which we commissioned for the parts of the garden to which we have access. This shows that we are serious in our attempts to save this unusual piece of our history for posterity."

The letter was written in September by our former Secretary, Pat Fulford.
