Replacing the plaque

A small piece of village history restored

In 1885 the villagers of Tansley, near Matlock, were given a warning and for more than the next 100 years the notice issued by the Bakewell Union Rural Sanitary Authority and fixed to the wall of a cottage in Tansley warned all villagers that : “Any Person or Persons found depositing any refuse or other matter injurious to health in any Public thoroughfare will be prosecuted as the law directs, by order of Albert Toft, Inspector of nuisances”. The order was dated Feby 20th 1885.

The sign, painted on wood, was saved some 20 years ago from being thrown away by village resident Denys Gaskell, repainted and given to Robert and Vicky Raynes, owners of the cottage on which it had been displayed who then replaced it exactly where it had been since 1885. The sign continued to deteriorate with the weather so after a few more years Robert and Vicky decided to remove the sign, repaint it and house it in an oak frame to preserve it for at least the next 100 years.

The picture shows the refurbished and protected sign being re-erected by Robert and Vicky on the side of their cottage in the exact position it used to occupy. The message is still pertinent today!

Tansley Remembered

Tansley Remembered

The launch of a new local History Book "Tansley Remembered" by Keith Taylor, was held at Tansley Village Hall on Saturday October 8th, 2005.

With over 400 photographs and 115,000 words of text, this 448 page quality book provides an evocative picture of life in Tansley and Lumsdale between 1880 and the present day for the cost of £10 stg.

School life, sporting and leisure time activities, work in the local mills, on the farm, at the sawmill, in the quarries, ropeworks and laundry and in the shops are all brought to life and the lives and deaths of those from the parish whose names are on the local war memorial are recalled

The arrival of the evacuees, the antics of the Home Guard, Tansley's Fire Brigade and Air Raid Wardens as well as the arrival in Tansley of the Army are dealt with in detail.

On display around the walls of the Village Hall were most of the 400 photographs included in the book. Signed copies of "Tansley Remembered" were on sale throughout the day.
