Introduction: This story takes place immediately after Heinrich Kemmer's flee from his enemies that are hunting him (Undead army book pg 76).
Heinrich had finally managed to shake off his pursuers. Wheezing heavily, he collapsed onto the ground, exhausted from the chase. A few metres ahead lay the tomb of Krell, Lord of the Undead, as he liked to call himself. With a huge effort Heinrich pulled himself up and walked slowly over to Krell's resting place. He knew that any physical attempts to open the tomb would fail, since Sigmar and his aides had placed a magical spell on it when they imprisoned Krell.
Heinrich managed a weak laugh when he saw the carvings on the tomb. The spell that imprisoned Krell was immensely powerful, yet simple to dispel. Raising his Skull Staff, Heinrich pointed at the tomb and began to recite an evil chant that would raise Krell and force him to do Heinrich's bidding.
However, Heinrich did not know that Nagash himself had planned this. Nagash had guided Heinrich to this place, in order to join his two Undead champions together and create an army to destroy Bretonnia.
As Heinrich finished his chant, there was a heaving noise from inside the tomb. Slowly, the heavy slab of stone that was placed over the tomb moved upwards. It slid across the ground and Krell rose up out of the tomb, carrying in his hand the feared Black Axe which could slowly kill foes with its slivers left in the wound.
Krell stepped out onto the ground and turned to face Heinrich. "Congratulations," he boomed. "I thought you'd never get here."
"And now that I have released you," rasped Heinrich, "you will obey me!"
Krell's laugh echoed around the valley. "Do you really think you were sent here to enslave me? No, you releasing me is part of a much bigger plan."
"What plan is that?" asked Heinrich.
"The plan to destroy the land of Bretonnia and resurrect Nagash, so he can take his rightful place as 'Supreme Lord of the Undead'," answered Krell. "You will raise a gigantic Undead army, which I shall lead in the invasion of Bretonnia. We shall then meet Nagash and start to turn the entire old world into an army of Undead. None will be able to stop us!"
"Very well," agreed Heinrich. "But if you have been fooling me, you will suffer at the hands of Nagash himself!"
Over the next few days, Heinrich slowly raised a huge Undead army. All the corpses from the battle against Krell rose as Skeletons, and the odd well preserved body came up as a zombie. Fortunately for Heinrich, a Necromancer was in the area who willingly supplied fresh corpses. He also supplied Heinrich with a Liche once he had served his purpose, giving Krell a chance to practice with his axe.
Eventually the great army was ready, but the nearby villages had heard word from the boasting Necromancer who had threatened to destroy them all. The news quickly reached the ears of Frank Kulk, the mayor and protector of the province. He had no trouble finding volunteers for his army, many townsfolk's fathers had died fighting against Krell, and were thirsty for revenge. An army was prepared, and Frank led the advance towards Glacier Lake, where Krell's tomb was.
Seeing that the humans were approaching, Krell ordered the Undead to stand and fight whilst Heinrich continued to expand the army with more raised corpses. The Skeletons formed a shambled line of defence, whilst the zombies marched (with the help of the Liche's magic) forward to engage the advancing humans.
The zombies were quickly dispatched by a hail of crossbow bolts and sword swings, and failed to kill anyone, or even slow the advance.
The humans kept coming, and Krell was growing desperate. Seeing nearly a third of the Skeletons fall from the Empire's war machines, he decided that it was better to retreat and attempt an invasion again than to stay and fall under weight of numbers.
Jumping onto an Undead steed, Krell rode off, followed by Heinrich, leaving the Liche to control the army so that they could escape. As they looked back, Krell vowed that one day he would come back and destroy these worthless humans. It was just a matter of time.
