The Time Machine Terrorist

Secret detective agent Ben Davidson was sitting in his detective’s office sorting through a pile of crime files. Suddenly there was a loud knocking on the door. “Come in!” shouted Ben. The door opened and in came the chief detective, Mark Tacky. He sat down on a chair opposite Ben’s desk and began to tell Ben about his next assignment.
“Ben, you know that terrorist called Rudley Moore?” he asked.
“Yes” replied Ben.
“Well he’s escaped from Plymouth prison and is thought to be hiding out in a secret laboratory built underground in Dartmoor. It also thought that he is constructing a time machine and plans to go back in time to ensure Guy Fawkes succeeds in blowing up the houses of parliament, a terrorist act in the past. If he succeeds it would drastically alter history. Your assignment is to find this laboratory, if it exists, and stop Rudley’s plans. Everything you will need has already been packed for you, including a tent so that you can camp out secretly on Dartmoor. Good luck Ben.”

Two days later, Ben had set up camp on Dartmoor. Using heat sensing equipment he scanned the area for Rudley Moore. Since the equipment had a brain scan of Rudley only Rudley would show up on the scanner. Unfortunately the scanner was  blank. Rudley wasn’t in the area. It was getting dark so Ben switched the scanner onto ‘alarm’ that would warn him when, and if, Rudley entered the area. Ben then switched his light off and settled down into his sleeping bag.

The next morning the alarm went off just after Ben had finished his breakfast. Quickly he rushed over to the scanner. In the top left hand corner a bleep representing Rudley was approaching the middle of the scanner, Ben’s camp. Ben grabbed his infra-red binoculars and focussed on the place from where Rudley was approaching . All he could see was heather and moss. Then a little green object appeared. As it came closer Ben recognized  it as Rudley Moore in an army jeep, probably stolen for this purpose.

Suddenly Rudley stopped the jeep and walked over to a cluster of heather. He pushed the heather apart and inserted a key into what look like solid ground. After a few seconds the ground opened and a huge lift rose up. Rudley drove the jeep into the lift and pressed a button on a small remote control. The lift began to descend slowly. Ben didn’t stop to look. Quickly he jumped into his own jeep behind his tent and sped towards the lift.

As he arrived Ben dived out of his jeep and into the lift just before it closed and landed right next to Rudley. But, before Ben could do anything, Rudley brought out his gun and pointed it at Ben. “What are you doing here, following me around the moors?” he asked. “Wait a minute, you’re that stupid detective who spoilt my plan to blow up Buckingham Palace aren’t you?” Ben nodded annoyed that he had been captured by the man he was supposed to arrest.

By this time the lift had reach the end of its slow journey. Rudley slowly drove the jeep carefully out of the lift, still pointing his gun at Ben. Rudley pressed another button on his remote control and a large panel silently opened. Rudley drove into the parking space beyond the panel. He got out of the jeep, motioning Ben to follow him. Rudley pressed yet another button on his remote control and another panel opened. Rudley and Ben stepped through the gap and into Rudley’s laboratory. Two technicians were checking over the controls.

They stood  to attention when Rudley entered. Passing his gun to Smasher (the first technician) Rudley ordered “Get some rope and tie this detective to the bottom of the lift shaft.”  “Is the time machine finished yet?” Rudley asked the other technician.
“Yes” replied the technician, whose name was Basher. “The bomb is also ready” he said, pointing to a small black bomb shell on a table.
“Excellent” said Rudley. “Follow me”. Picking up the bomb, Basher followed Rudley to the lift shaft where Smasher was tying up Ben. The lift had been moved to the top of the shaft. “Good-bye detective Ben” said Rudley. He pressed a button and the lift began to descend again. Rudley then hurried back into the laboratory, followed by Basher and Smasher. They stepped into a little room about as big as three telephone boxes. Basher flipped a green switch, twisted a dial and hit a big red button. Slowly they began to fade away.

Meanwhile, Ben was frantically sawing at his ropes with a pen knife. Just in the nick of time, he broke the rope and jumped out of the bottom of the lift shaft. Thud! The lift reached the bottom, missing Ben by inches. Quickly Ben rushed into the laboratory, but Rudley and his assistants had already disappeared. Luckily, Smasher had left his notes on the top of the control panel. Ben picked them up and read through them. He jumped into the little room (the time machine), flicked the green switch and hit the red button ( fortunately, the dial had already set the time co-ordinates, so Ben didn’t need to calculate them). Ben began to fade away.

Before he knew it, Ben re-materialized, but this time he was underneath the Houses of Parliament. Further along the tunnel, he heard Rudley telling Basher and Smasher to shut up. He drew his gun and cautiously walked on towards the voices.

At the end of the tunnel, Rudley was helping Guy Fawkes to set up the gunpowder. Actually, Basher and Smasher were doing all the work, whilst Rudley gave out the orders. Then Ben suddenly stepped out from the shadows of the dark tunnel. Rudley made a move for his gun but Ben was already covering him with his own gun.
“It’s no use keeping us here” said Rudley, “the guards will arrive soon and you won’t be able to escape then.” Ben knew that Rudley was right, he had to escape or otherwise there would be a huge confusion over Bonfire night, and the historians would not know what to do.
“How do you reverse the time travel mechanism?” he asked Rudley.
“With this laser gun” answered Rudley, bringing a small purple gun out of his pocket. “It only has enough power for four people though.”
“Then we’ll have to leave Mr. Fawkes here so we don’t spoil Bonfire Night” said Ben. “Give me the laser gun.”
“No” said Rudley. Rudley was just about to turn the gun against himself  when six armed  guards rushed in from the tunnel.
“Stop in the name of the King!” the leader said. They marched over to grab Ben but he quickly snatched the laser gun and fired it at everyone except Guy Fawkes and the guards. The laser worked almost instantly. Five seconds later Ben, Rudley, Smasher and Basher reappeared in the laboratory. Pointing his gun at the three criminals Ben switched on his radio.
“I have apprehended Rudley and two of his assistants at co-ordinates 23,64 on Dartmoor” he said. The chief detective’s voice came through.
“Well done. We’re coming along now.” Soon Rudley was back where he belonged, in prison, while back in time the guards were torturing Guy Fawkes.
