How I made this website
Introduction: So, you're wondering how this masterpiece came to life? Well, read on to find out...
The Start: I started my website by planning out where all the pages and links would go on a piece of paper (there's nothing worse than links that don't go anywhere or 'dead end' pages). This is the best way to start and I would recommend this option to anyone who is thinking of making their own site or wants to update and revamp their current one.
Once I had the plan, I could start making the pages that the website would consist of. I started with the most important page, the home page.
Home page: As any designer will tell you, first impressions count highly. Since the home page is the page most browsers are going to see first, it has to encourage them to go further into your site and make them want to come back again. Because of this, I wanted my home page to be user friendly, quick to download and to count how many people visited it (although I've not got a visitor counter there yet - that's next on the huge list of 'things to do').
I also wanted to monitor how many people got further into my site, to see if my home page was having the effect I wanted it to (I haven't managed this yet either - I'm still working on it!).
The other pages: I wanted people to have easy access to the rest of my site, so I put a few general links on my home page, which mostly lead to other pages with extra links to other pages. I tried to make the layout as simple as possible, so even inexperienced browsers could find their way around (I hope!).
Slowly I started to create the main pages, with the links to other pages. I used pictures where necessary, although I didn't want to have a long wait for downloading, as that really puts people off (I know it does to me!).
After the basis of my website was established, I then began editing the HTML code to incorporate JavaScript into my pages (unfortunately, some Java does not work with Microsoft Interenet Explorer or earlier versions of Netscape). Small things, such as status bar messages, were added first, although I hope to eventually create some online programs such as army generators for Warhammer armies.
This site been through about five facelifts, as I discovered new ways to make them better (javascript helped a lot). In the near future I hope to get round to those visitor counters, and a guestbook plus a message board if I have time. The one problem though is advertising, I really hate those annoying pop up boxes that are found on so many web sites. If anyone has any more ideas (no matter how crazy!), then e-mail me. I am always glad of feedback.
