Ponte Rialto

The Ponte Rialto is probably the most famous bridge in a city of many bridges. It is in the heart of the old trading area of the city, the wine, coal and iron traded still reflected in the nearby street names. Not content with trading on the surrounding streets, the bridge itself is lined with shops.

The Church of Santa Maria di Salute is one of the city's "plague churches". Built at a time when plague swept through the tightly packed houses it was designed as much as an offering to keep the plague away as a place of worship.
