The "finest drawing room in Europe", Napoleon is supposed to have called St Mark's Square. Certainly it makes an impressive sight, even on a wet autumn evening.
St Mark's Basilica is placed at one end of the square and has a distinctly byzantine flavour to it. Based on a equal sided Greek cross and with multiple ornate domes it reflects the importance Venice once had as a gateway between east and west.
