Introduction

The village of Copmanthorpe lies 4 miles South West of York, in England. The history of Copmanthorpe as described in the following Web Pages shows how events happening within York and sometimes in England have shaped this village. As many of the clues for the function of the village of Copmanthorpe draw from major events happening within England, then such clues may equally apply to other English villages. The picture below shows the village centre where a little girl is taken a well earned rest. This village scene could be from one of many thousands of villages around Britain.

Whilst compiling this, I expected the early history of the village to be fairly uneventful as there is very little in the way of direct evidence. However, there is a lot of circumstantial evidence of the early history that makes it open to interpretation and very interesting.

Acknowledgement

I would like to thank Richard Muir and Michael Woods who have fired my passion for local history and also my wife who has had to endure the odd trip to Stillingfleet church at dusk, just to see Viking door hinges. Anyone who has a burning desire to have their eyes open to the abundant historical world around them then the book by Richard Muir called "Reading the Landscape" is an excellent start.

Any Comments

I am an amateur local historian and would appreciate any feedback from any fellow historians on the content. I also would like any feedback from any fellow web designers on the presentation of the web pages. My E-Mail address is given at the bottom of the index.
