Places Between York and Tadcaster in the Domesday Book
One of the most impressive facts that people churn out about the history of Copmanthorpe is that it gets a mention in the Domesday Book. This book was a survey commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1086 to basically see what lands he had 'inherited' and what taxes he could charge. It is the first Census of England. Tracking through the place names which are situated in the area between York and Tadcaster, bounded by the river Ouse and the A64, the Domesday book contains virtually all the villages that currently exist (only Holme Green is not shown). The role of honour is listed below. The conclusions are interesting:
| Place Name in Domesday Book | Place Name Now | Comment |
| Copemantorp | Copmanthorpe | |
| Acastre | Acaster Malbis And Acaster Selby | |
| Apleton | Appleton Roebuck | |
| Stiveton | Steeton | Marked on the map now as Steeton Hall |
| Coleton | Colton | |
| Ositone | Oxton | |
| Badetone | Bolton Percy | Renamed to take the name of the Norman Percy family |
| Torp | Pallethorpe | Only Pallethorpe Farm marks this place now. |
| Hornitone | Hornington | Only Hornington bridge and Manor are marked on the map near Bolton Percy |
| Torp | Bishopthorpe | |
There is a good book in York reference library called 'Yorkshire Domesday' where I have taken most of this information.
