This is a photograph of St Josephs School football team for the year 1951-52 when we were winners of the DeernessValley Nursing Cup when we defeated Waterhouses Secondary School, the match being played at Ushaw Moor Welfare Ground at the rear of Station Road. Waterhouses was the modern day equivalent of Manchester United in those days. They never lost a match. Well they didn't win them all. The Parish Priest, Father Oswald Whittaker and Mr Frank Murray who was later to become Headmaster are also shown. Here goes-
Back Row l to r - Fr. Whittaker, myself, Billy OLiver, Tommy Harrison and Mr. Murray. Centre Row - Cyril Sanders, Terry Kenna, MIckey Doran, Colin Alderton, Danny Overton. Front Row - Gordon Gillon, Joe Kirkup and Jimmy French. Paul we also won the the same Cup either the preceding or following year. Perhaps you know someone listed and can get further information from them. I do not have a photograph of that team. I hope people view this and it kindles interest.
