A Sure Start for Parents

Parents are shaping the future of children’s centre services in County Durham.

And by having their say on activities it’s hoped mums and dads will also access the many projects available to them under the Sure Start scheme such as health, training and employment services.

Parents have helped devise a number of activities including:

·        Bears and Cubs young parents group, Ushaw Moor Sure Start Children’s Centre, Durham Road, Ushaw Moor, Mondays, 1pm to 3pm;

·        Toddles and Waddles young parents group, Brandon Sure Start Children’s Centre, Carr Avenue, Brandon, Wednesdays, 1pm to 3pm;

·        Fabtots, a one-off soft play session at Ushaw Moor Sure Start Children’s Centre, on Monday, April 16, 10am to noon.

The clubs give parents a chance to get together and include a mix of children’s activities, sessions on health issues and quizzes.

Community Participation Worker Abi Major said: “Young parents should be involved in the development of children’s centre services and these groups have been developed through consultation with parents.

“They offer a more informal and fun opportunity for young parents to take part in the centres and access early advice and support.”
