History Of RAF Mildenhall - Post WW2

After WW2 Nos 35, 115, 149 and 207 squadrons flew Lancasters and Lincolns from Mildenhall until they disbanded in 1950.
In July 1950 the long affiliation between RAF Mildenhall and the United States Airforce (USAF) began with the arrival of the 329th Bomb Squadron and their B-50D Superfortresses. The prime reason for this detatchment to the UK was the outbreak of the Korean War.

In October 1951 RAF Mildenhall offically came under the control of SAC (Strategic Air Command).

A number of units operated aircraft from Mildenhall during this time. Aircraft such as the B-29 and B-50 as well as detachments of the RB-47.

In 1953 the 22nd AREFS began operating from Mildenhall with their KC-97E's. Thus starting a long association between the airbourne refueling role and RAF Mildenhall.

In 1959 The control of RAF Mildenhall was passed from SAC to USAFE (USAF Europe)
