History Of RAF Mildenhall - Pre WW2


Mildenhalls early history begins with it's official opening on October 16, 1934 following the governments decision to grant it the title of the first of the New RAF Stations as authorised under the RAF's prewar expansion programme.

The opening was marked by the hosting of the famous MacRobertson England to Australia Air Race.

On 6th July 1935 Mildenhall hosted a line up of over 350 aircraft for the Silver Jubilee Review by King George V.
During the build up towards almost certain war with Germany, Mildenhall was used to establish the various Bomber Commands group headquarters. During this time Nos 38, 99, 149 and 211 squadrons were in residence.
