History Of RAF Mildenhall - WW2
In 1939 when World War 2 began, Mildenhall was HQ No 3 Group, RAF Bomber Command. Nos 99 and 149 squadrons flew Wellington bombers against German targets. Later in the war these same bombers would be engaged in bombing missions over Italy.
A Film made in 1941 called "Target For Tonight" featured a Wellington bomber from 149 squadron.
Towards the end of 1941 the Wellingtons were replaced with Stirlings.
In 1942 a Wellington from 149 squadron dropped the first "Blockbuster" bomb.
At the end of 1942 Mildenhall was closed to allow for the laying of three concrete runways.
April 1943, Mildenhall reopened and became the base of operations for Nos 15 and 622 squadrons along with their Stirlings.
December 1943, Nos 15 and 622 squadrons converted to the Avro Lancaster and stayed this way until the end of the war.
