Belgian Hares and Us:

Our names are Paul and Sue Threapleton and we live in a small village in East Yorkshire, close to the junction of the M62 and the M18 motorways.

We have both spent our lives surrounded by animals, and have been breeding and showing for more years than we care to remember! We have been probably the most successful exhibitors of Fancy Rats in recent years, winning the Bradford Championship Show (the “Crufts” for Small Livestock) over six times. We have also done very well with our Fancy Mice, winning Best in Show at the Bradford Championship Show in 2008, as well as winning many other Best in Show awards at other shows over the years.

In larger livestock, We are also breeders and exhibitors of cats; Egyptian Maus and Ocicats. These also take us to many championship shows around the country. Our cats page is listed in the "Links" section of this website.

Unfortunately, we simply do have the time to "do" everything we'd like, so a desire to re-take up the challenge of the rabbit fancy has meant we have had to take the decision to give up our Fancy Rats.

So, why the Belgian Hare? Well, Paul had already started a new venture with the Argente Crème rabbit, and a wander round the "Bradford" rabbit hall, by pure chance, found us by the hare pens. Paul remarked on how he had admired the grace and intelligence of the breed, since he started in small livestock, but never had the space to devote to them. Well, space is one thing we aren’t exactly short of at our current house, and since the Belgian Hare combines everything we love about small livestock; rich agouti colouring; fabulous racy type and intelligence, then the Belgian Hare was simply a “must”!

Calls to Maureen Hoyle and Neil Harris the week after “Bradford” gave rise to a mated doe, we called Honey, and we are very grateful to them for such a good start. From there we’ve progressed with our breeding, added more large hutches to the stud and are thoroughly enjoying our showing of this fabulous animal. Our Hares are out at shows most weekends; and regularly winning too! Yes, the Hares are definitely here to stay.
