Armstrong Whitworth ArgosyDesigned and built by the Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft company based at Baginton airport Coventry, the AW650 Argosy was intended for use as a freighter for civil and military operators. The AW650 prototype made it's maiden flight from Baginton on January 8th 1959 in the hands of company test pilot Eric Franklin. The design utilised a twin boom layout with cargo doors at the front and rear, and wings from the Avro Lincoln, (a bad short term decision). Early customers of the Argosy included British European Airways and Riddle in the United States. The Royal Air Force decided to buy it's own version of the Argosy which differed from the civil argosy in having more powerful engines and a clamshell rear door opening. Fifty six Argosies were built for the RAF and served from 1962 until 1978 when the fleet was retired. One or two Argosies were still operating in the US during the early 1990's. Cruising
Speed: 273 mph
