Avro(Canada) CF-105 ArrowFor the Canadian aviation industry and for Avro Canada in particular, the story of the Avro Canada CF 105 was utterly traumatic and was paralelled by that of its British contemporary, the BAC TSR-2, in that both were destroyed by short term political considerations. The first stages of the development of a new two seat long range interceptor for the Royal Canadian Air Force was formulated in 1953. Avro's design team attacked the new and demanding task with great vigour and by 1954 the company was involved in the manufacture of five Arrow 1 prototypes. Until the indigenous PS13 Iriqois tubojets were available the prototypes were to be powered by two Pratt and Whitney J75's. The first Arrow flew on March 25th 1958, flown by the former Battle of Britain and Gloster Chief test pilot Jan Zurakowski, and was a brilliant technical success. Less than a year later the entire project was cancelled and all five prototypes were ordered destroyed. Even to this day the Avro Arrrow is still capable of arousing enormous passion in its native country. PerformanceA
top speed of Mach 2.2 was recorded during tests
