BAe
Hawk: Red Arrows, RAF Scampton, 2000
BAe Hawk T1AThe Hawk was designed as a specialist training aircraft which would replace the various training types operated by the RAF. The Gnat was useless for weapons training, the Jet Provost was too sedate and the Hunter was too expensive. Therefore the resultant aircraft had to offer safe and sure flying characteristics, a respectable performance, be able to carry a wide range of weaponry, whilst at the same time being economical to operate. The British Aerospace Hawk more than adequately fulfills these requirements, with the type being exported widely, and has also been built under license in modified form as the Goshawk by McDonnell Douglas in the USA. In addition to the training variants a series of counter insurgency and light attack fighters have been developed from the basic Hawk design. The Hawk is one of the best known aircraft in the UK as it is the current mount of the world famous Red Arrows aerobatic team. PerformanceMaximum
level speed: Mach 0.9 at altitude
