Nimrod R1, RAF Waddington 2001
BAe Nimrod R1The Nimrod was designed and built to replace the Avro Shackleton as the RAF's long range maritime patrol aircraft. The Nimrod was developed from the De Haviland Comet 4, (the worlds first commercial jet air liner) by adding a second bubble to the fuselage incorporating a weapons bay. The Nimrod entered service in 1969 and was the most advanced maritime patrol aircraft operated by any air force. Due to continued improvement and development the Nimrod is an even more potent weapons system offering good speed at altitude, high manoeuverability, long range and a wide variety of weaponry. During the UK winter the Nimrod is constantly in the news assisting in long range air/sea rescue missions. The Nimrod has been utilised in three conflicts, the Falklands War, The Gulf War, and in its surveillence role, the recent events in Afghanistan. The model illustrates the surveillence version of the Nimrod which bristles with all manner of aerials and antennae. During 1998 the Nimrod fleet was vastly upgraded at a cost of 1.8 billion pounds and should remain in service well into the future. PerformanceMaximum
level speed: 575 mph
