Boulton
Paul Defiant Mk1: 141 Squadron, 1940.

Boulton Paul DefiantThe Boulton Paul Defiant was designed to replace the Hawker Demon two seat fighter. Unlike any other modern fighter aircraft of the period the fighters armament was concentrated in a power operated turret, and there was no provision for forward firing guns. Although the Bolton Paul company did their best with the concept, designing a neat clean aeroplane which in many ways was superior to its contemporary the Hawker Hurricane, the weight and drag limitations of the turret proved to great to overcome. None the less the RAF felt the need for a two seat fighter and the Defiant was ordered into production and entered service in 1939. The Defiant enjoyed a brief moment of glory in May 1940 when 18 Me109's were claimed shot down for the loss of no Defiants during the course of one days action. The Luftwaffe had probably mistaken the Defiant for the Hurricane, (which it resembled) and attacked from the rear. They never made that mistake again and the Defiant squadrons were quickly decimated from that point on. Discredited as a day fighter the Defiant became a useful interim night fighter until more suitable aircraft were delivered. One Defiant survives at the RAF museum Hendon.Performance A
