Dornier 335The Dornier 335 was the most radical German piston engined aircraft of World War Two, using a unique push-pull engine configuration it was one of the fastest piston engined fighters ever built. Designed as a heavy multi role fighter the Do 335 had the forward engine mounted conventionally in the nose. whilst the second engine was mounted amidships driving a pusher propellor via a long propellor shaft. Using this arrangement the Do335 had the drag of a single engined fighter, but with the power of twin engines. The first prototype flew in October 1943, and began service trials in the summer of 1944, which is as close as the Dornier 335 got to active service, before allied troops overan the Dornier production facility. The Dornier 335 was an exhilerating aircraft to fly, because of it's speed and a surprisingly tight turning radius for an aircraft of it's size, and was one of the first aircraft to be fitted with an ejection seat. Despite the astonishing performance of the Do 335 it was already verging on obsolesecence, because of the emergence of the jet fighter. PerformanceMax
