Eurofighter TyphoonDuring the late 1970's there was a long term requirement by the NATO countries for a state of the art modern fighter which would enter service at the turn of the century and would be able to match, (or be superior too) Russian, or American, (without being beholden too) fighter aircraft. In 1982 the three Panavia, (British Aerospace, MBB, and Aeritalia) companies which had successfully produced the Tornado put forward a proposal for an aircraft known as the Agile Combat Aircraft. Unfortunately at this point MBB and Aeritalia pulled out leaving British Aerospace with the option of dropping the project or continuing alone. To their great credit British Aerospace opted to continue, with many sub contractors contributing components. The first prototype EAP, (Experimental Aircraft Programme) was flown from Warton by British Aerospace test pilot David Eagles on 8th August 1986. The aim of the prototype EAP was to demonstrate that a highly unstable aircraft could achieve very high levels of agility using a modern fly by wire, computer controlled system. In 1987 the definitive ESR-D NATO requirement was issued and a new consortium, (Eurofighter) involving the Panavia companies and the Spanish company CASA was formed to develop the EAP into front line fighter. Unfortunately since then, the Eurofighter Typhoon as good as it is, (and it is very good) has achieved more fame as a political football which has no doubt contributed to its prolonged gestation. The Typhoon prototype first flew in 1993 and in 2002 "entered" service with the RAF, although squadron service seems to be a couple of years in the future. The Eurofighter Typhoon is a highly capable state of the art fighter aircraft and will replace the Panavia Tornado F3 and Sepecat Jaguar in RAF service, 232 aircraft are currently on order for the RAF.Performance A
