Lockheed
Super Constellation: TWA during 1952

|
Lockheed Super Constellation The first Lockheed C69 Constellation first flew on January 9th 1943, the main pilot for the flight being Eddie Allen. The first flight being trouble free. The second Constellation was finished in TWA colours and used by Howard Hughes, (who had bankrolled much of the project), to set a new cross country record. The first nine Constellations of the TWA order went to the USAAF and the second batch of five were ordered directly for military use. These aircraft served with the Air Transport Command during the final year of the war. After the war with military orders being cut back Lockheed decided to concentrate on the commercial market. Pan Am made the first revenue generating flight from New York to Bermuda on February 3rd 1946 with TWA starting a Washington-New York-Paris on February 6th. The Lockheed Constellation offered a huge improvement in speed and comfort over a previous airliners and the aircraft gathered a great deal of favourable publicity although the Connie was never more than a moderate success. The
model 1049 which was to be known as the "Super Constellation"
incorporated a stretched fuselage increasing passenger seating from 69
to 92 and greater fuel capacity with thev option of using wingtip tanks..
The Super Constellation was certified on November 29th 1951 and seemed
to be the aircraft that airlines wanted and the order book rapidly increased,
with 100 on order before the prototype flew. Sadly, perhaps the intoduction
of the De Haviland Comet and the Boeing 707 dealt a rapid end to the long
range commecial propliner and Constellations rapidly disappeared from
the major airlines inventory. Performance Maximum
speed 299 mph at 11000 ft.
