The Mig 21 formed the backbone of the Warsaw Pact air forces from the early 1960's through the 1970's. For many of these years the Mig 21 was the most widely used jet fighter in the world. The Mig 21 was the result of experience gained by the Russians during the Korean war and initially was an outstanding lightweight fighter which was subsequently highly developed resulting in the Mig21 Mbis all weather dual role fighter of the 1970's, which only resembled the initial production models.
