The School management team

The school is managed by a team including the head teacher, the school senior management team and the governors. The head teacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and for advising on and implementing the governing body's strategic framework. The governing body take a largely strategic role in running the school with some tactical responsibilities and acts as a "critical friend" to the head teacher by providing advice and support.

The role of the Governing Body

The governing body's main role is to help raise standards of achievement. It:-

• is accountable for the performance of the school to parents and the wider community

• plans the school's future direction

• selects the head teacher

• makes decisions on the school's budget and staffing

• makes sure the National Curriculum is taught

• decides how the school can encourage pupils' spiritual, moral and cultural development

• makes sure the school provides for all its pupils, including those with special needs.

Most of the work of the Governing Body is carried out through committees. The committees currently active are:-

• Curriculum - chaired by Janet Bamford
• Finance, premises, health and safety and staffing - chaired by Wilf Harrison
• Head teacher's objective setting - chaired by Wilf Harrison

School management philosophy

The School is managed according to the guidelines and requirements of Government. The management style is open and inclusive, with emphasis on teamworking and a strong focus on timely decision making. Communication between the management team is a priority. Frequent contact between the Governors, and a high amount of time spent in the school by the whole team, provide a foundation for making effective, relevant and tough decisions when they are needed.

Terms of reference for the Governing Body

The Governing Body will act as a corporate body. In carrying out the functions/duties this Governing Body will act with:-

• Integrity
• Honesty
• Objectivity

and in the best interests of Pensford Primary School.

The Governing Body will be open about decisions and actions taken. The Governing Body shall be prepared to explain its actions and decisions. However, the Governing Body shall not disclose material or information relating to:-

• A named Teacher or other person employed or engaged or proposed to be employed or engaged, at the school.
• A named pupil at, or candidate for admission to, the school

- or -

• Any matter which by reason of its nature, the Governing Body or a committee of the Governing Body are satisfied should remain confidential.
