Note |
As with many older series there is often an unscreened or missing episode - the above is the anomaly in this series: |
|
Having not viewed the episode recently myself I can't confirm whether it is technically part of the series. It is known that it is a Yorkshire Television one-off drama that was tagged onto the end of season 2 broadcasts and believed to have been billed at the time as an episode of 'Thriller'. It is apparently said to a much remembered story. (personally I can't remember this one from original transmission, but it was 25 over years ago!). It also aired as part of the package sold to ABC in the US. (which would seem to add credence to it being a 'Thriller' episode) [ the recording still exists in the Yorkshire Televison archives ] |

*All original UK transmissions were in the standard THRILLER format, but now many only exist in the TVM format, as a result of ITC library purges (although not exclusively). |
All episodes were converted into a TV movie format (TVM)* for sale overseas (In the US airing under the unhelpful generic title of 'ABC Mystery Movie' along with US produced TV movies, making up a 113 epsiode run). The UK 'Thriller' credits and theme were removed and freshly shot title graphics inserted. At minimum there was a compilation of forthcoming scenes acting as a teaser, but some episodes had filmed sequences added using new actors supposedly in character to form an introduction into the stories (Some title sequences adding as much as 7minutes to the running time). These additional scenes are very noticable when viewed, especially with glaring continuity errors in the use of actor doubles and new locations, totally out of keeping with the original. A prime example of this is in 'Possession' where it is obvious that a car is being driving on continental roads whereas the story location edited-in is set in Britain (Even actors names on the titles were incorrectly spelt, 'James Cossin' instead of 'James Cossins' in this particular case) In addition some episodes were even retitled for the overseas audience (alternative titles are shown in brackets) New up tempo music complimenting that of Laurie Johnson (author of the original) was added over the credits and varies on most installments, and is mostly catalogue. |

Broadcast History |
The entire series remains unaired in the UK in recent years (ATV losing it's franchise at the end of 1981). The 'Westward' and 'HTV' tv regions had aired episodes toward the end of the late 1970's in a late Friday night spot and 'TVS' is known to have shown some as Late Night Movies on Mondays during the 1980's. In the US episodes were aired on ABC and syndicated in the late 1970's, often showing in an obscure early morning slot (all in the TVM format). Although it's also known that episodes from the series have aired in Australia since and have had a brief resurrection on satellite in the UK on the 'old style' Bravo channel (some of these were TV Movies which would indicate that they no longer exist in the original ' Thriller' format). |

As with most of the other shows in the ITC back catalogue there have been video releases of a number of episodes from this series (4 episodes in the UK), although when? where? exactly how many? and which specific titles? in other countries I am not totally clear on. However those that I know to have been commercially available (either for sale or rental/ UK or Overseas - suprisingly more in the US) are listed below : |
|
SEARCH |
I cannot guarantee the availability of any of these US titles as they are fairly old releases, for information I suggest that you check out http://www.imdb.com and do a search by title (bearing in mind that some stories use the alternate titles in the US), however I have been advised that copies are still in circulation. |

Many Thanks to David Moninger for help in research for much of this US information |
