  Pattern Sonata
A strong, hard edged piece, using a number of compositional devices including palindromes, textural patterning and metrical modulation. Although written in the older and harsher 'modernist' style this piece is definitely not intended as an exercise in brutal intellectual rigour but rather expression straight from the heart. The example you'll see, if you click on 'Pattern Sonata' below, starts at bar 189 and runs to the end of the piece, but see the note below.

Instrumentation:
flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano.

To see it you'll need your own copy of Scorch 2. If you haven't already got it, why not add this page to your Favourites folder, then go to the Scorch Website and download your free copy? You can then quickly return to this page and view a portion of the score.

Please note: this piece contains effects not satisfactorily obtainable on a computer sound system. Sound has, therefore, been disabled. So don't expect to hear anything!

  A Journey Inwards
Not really a serial piece, but is constructed using rigidly enforced compositional procedures... that is until the viola tries to break free! But the others 'jump' on him, enforcing the regime back on the instrument. An autobiographical statement expressing frustration with Modernism: the language many composers at the time felt they had to adopt in order to gain any notice or credibilty.

Instrumentation:
flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon; 2 violins, viola, cello
