Letters to the Editor.

Name change misses the point.

YOUR ARTICLE "NEW NAME FOR TROUBLED RSL" (23 May 2002, page 4) highlights the central problem at West Hampstead Housing Association - owner Genesis imagines that names matter when, under their management, WHHA's debt has risen from £3m to £8m as of February.

And that figure is rising inexorably at £1000 per day without Genesis being able, it would appear, to do anything about it.

At the February annual general meeting, Genesis group director of finance Dominic Gibb simply refused to answer questions on this vital subject - despite the fact that it is selling property recently refurbished with Housing Corporation money to keep on an even keel.

The corporation must its authority to get in staff with a proven track record of troubleshooting and handling arrears before it is to late.

The beech is not a bad tree to use as possible new name for WHHA, but since Genesis never bothered to check the availability of the name "Beechwood" with Companies House, I would suggest it appropriate that the new organisation be named after the mighty Pleigh, the national tree of Ruritania.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Rutherford,

Chair, WHHA Tenants' Association (in exile).
