New ombudsman will have much work to do

Your item on a proposed new ombudsman for housing (Inside Housing, 28 October) is interesting, but the new office must learn lessons from the Housing Ombudsman Service, previously, the Independent Housing Ombudsman Service.

The HOS is funded entirely by the landlords. This may be why I received a letter from the ombudsman, thanking me for the new, and telling evidence, and saying that he did not propose to change his adjudication.

A new ombudsman must be fully independent of landlords and tenants alike. If the same staff were to appear in the new ombudsman's office, this would generate suspicion, unless of course, those people had reported their concerns to the ODPM.

The social housing sector wastes a massive amount of taxpayers' money. A new ombudsman could deal with this problem, and many others, thereby saving money and improving quality of life.
