Letters to the Editor.

June 9, 2006.

"The public has its eye on social landlords' actions".

Your article, Housing associations to be hit by tax loophole closure, (Inside Housing, May 26) begs the question why social housing providers are generating these levels of profit at all.

A large chunk of the social housing sector is a big dysfunctional mess. Either the sector cleans itself up voluntarily to the satisfaction of the tenants or, sooner or later, all parties will find themselves being subjected to close public scrutiny which they might rather avoid.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Rutherford.

[This letter was in response to an article in Inside Housing which described how private companies working with housing associations were about to have their profits taxed. This article may be found here.

For the record, Genesis made a Gross Operating Profit of about £28m profit last year. This is £77,000 per day.]
