Housing association 'needs more
scrutiny'. April 28, 2006.
Your article "Council's tall
story", (Wood & Vale, Apr 21) highlights the
disgraceful and deliberate delay to get past the
forthcoming local election. But it omits to ask
why, out of 2000 housing associations, Genesis was
chosen as the developer.
Genesis operate in almost total
secrecy. Its annual general meetings are secret,
along with the board meetings, minutes and agendas.
It has refused to fund their principal tenants
association, the Independent Federation of Genesis
Residents, run at massive profit levels (gross
operating profit is £77,000 per day) whilst
often refusing tenants the most basic repairs -
like the unblocking of a chimney that they blocked
for reasons of cost.
Paddington Churches HA, the central
player, recently went to their shareholders and got
clearance to increase their borrowing limit from
£350,000 to £750,000. The interest is
easy to calculate. When I asked a set of eight
questions about their financial viability, Genesis'
Chief Executive, Anu Vedi, refused to answer even
one of them.
Tenants deserve better than this.
The people of Queens Park deserve a development
that they are happy and proud to live with. Those
who would profit from the maximising of resident
density, Brent council and Genesis, should not be
allowed to rape the land with impunity.
Yours sincerely
Peter Rutherford.
