Plug complaint is just a drop in
ocean.
Aug 3rd, 2007.
Your article "Blocked drain floods
flat with raw sewage", (Wood & Vale, July 20)
highlights what goes wrong when an unaccountable
housing association becomes involved with council
tenants.
"Paddington Churches was
unavailable for comment", your piece says. Why
should they? They answer to the Housing
Corporation, a valueless toothless dragon, and
their ombudsman, the Housing Ombudsman Service, is
worth less than a broken biscuit.
This episode is not unique. There
are many examples of this sort of incompetent and
abusive behaviour. What is so disgraceful is that
PCHA and its housing group, Genesis, probably
have between 500 and 1,000 empty homes, many of
which could have been pushed into temporary short
term use to help out.
The social housing industry is a
dysfunctional mess.
Much of it is unbelievably wasteful
and is in desperate need of proper policing. Let us
hope that the reports that the Housing Corporation
is due to be melted down are true, and that its
replacement will do the job properly.
Yours sincerely
Peter Rutherford.
