A team of scientists have set up a laboratory in an ex-military outpost located miles out into the sea. The scientists there are conducting revolutionary medical research and have made a breakthrough in the treatment of degenerative brain disease.
However with the progression of the film we see that the project leaders are trying to ignore and conceal dangerous warning signs. These warning signs will manifest themselves through the actions of the three Great White Sharks, which the scientists are experimenting on.
The film culminates with a make or break experiment, one of the sharks is captured and has fluid removed from his brain. The team look on in amazement as the procedure confirms that they have found a groundbreaking cure. However the success was only achieved after gene manipulation (breaching medical codes) to enlarge the size of the sharks' brains. The effects of this are just about to be felt; now the rules have changed from medical discovery to survival.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere from this film was badly tainted by the natural comparison to
JAWS. However as the plot developed so did my excitement and intrigue levels.
Ultimately the film didn't quite get there, the struggle for reality being just
too much.
Plot
Pleased that a plot actually existed. Indeed behind the shark scenes ran a plot
extremely similar to the unethical human intervention issues raised in Jurassic
Park.
Special Effects
The computer-generated images were technically very good. However there is no
point in creating a realistic looking CGI shark, only to have it behaving contrary
to all the rules of nature. It could never look right.(ED- Richard can't have
watched the making off documentary as it explained that there was very little
CGI in the film and that the shark was actually a full size, functioning model
made using the latest airospace technology)
Sound
Yes there was sound, and it was OK.
Acting
The gorgeous female scientist was just too engrossed in her work to be plausible
and the shark tamer (for want of a better term) would not have survived his
own antics for any more than five seconds.
Overall
I don't think this film was ever meant to make you wonder, "what if it
really did happen?" With this thought in mind I can honestly say that Deep
Blue Sea is a very watchable action film, complete with plot. I believe that
this film falls right into the middle of the three star brackets.
Carter Blake - Thomas Jane
Dr. Susan McAlester - Saffron Burrows
Russell Franklin - Samuel L. Jackson
Janice Higgins - Jacqueline McKenzie
